On Tuesday, April 25, 202, 33-year-old Akeem Grant, of Mount Vernon was arraigned in Mount Vernon City Court, for the April 6, 2023, murder of 18-year-old Tamani Turner. On April 6, 2023, Mount Vernon Police were dispatched to the area of Garden Avenue and East 4th Street on a report of a man shot. The victim, Tamani Turner, had already been removed from the scene to Montefiore New Rochelle Hospital by a private vehicle when officers arrived. Mr. Turner was subsequently transferred to Jacobi Medical Center where he ultimately succumbed to the gun shot wounds he had suffered. Detectives from the Mount Vernon Police Department with the assistance of the FBI Westchester Safe Streets Task Force and Westchester County Police Real Time Crime Center identified the suspect as Akeem Grant and immediately began attempts to locate him. On the morning of April 7, 2023, detectives were notified by members of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection that Grant was attempting to board a plane to Jamaica at Philadelphia International Airport. Grant was detained and ultimately placed under arrest by members of the FBI Philadelphia Field Office and Philadelphia Police Department. After extradition proceedings Grant was transported back to Mount Vernon where he was arraigned on the charges of Murder 2nd Degree, Criminal Possession of a Weapon 2nd Degree, and several other associated charges stemming from his attempt to conceal the crime and his whereabouts. Grant was remanded to the Westchester County Department of Corrections where he will be held pending additional court proceedings.
