Last night the City of Mount Vernon hosted a community conversation on cannabis. The event started around 6:30 pm at Double Doors Event space located at 29 Elm Avenue. Guests for the event joined us in-person as well as online via Facebook live. This was the first of a series of conversations around cannabis. The purpose of the community conversations are to get feedback from the community.
Last night’s conversation served as an overview where general information was discussed and presented around: Marijuana Regulation and Taxation Act, information on cannabis licenses, adult use regulations, economic development and curriculum training, and ancillary business and career opportunities. There were presenters from The NYS Office of Cannabis Management, Massachusetts Cannabis Business Association, Workforce Development Institute, and The New Grow center who spoke on cannabis ecosystems.
Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard said, “I do as mayor support adult-use of cannabis within the City of Mount Vernon. I believe it will bring a lot of business and opportunities to Mount Vernon. We have a very serious thriving legacy market. Which poses a bigger threat, a threat many of us are not looking at...The legacy market is going to continue regardless and if we’re going to deal with the issue of cannabis in Mount Vernon, we need to make sure it is regulated, safe, and that there is economic development and job training in ancillary businesses attached to it. It is the legacy market that caused thousands of our residents to go to jail and now we need to make sure there is a legal ecosystem that thousands of our residents will benefit from.”
