Bureau Of Sanitation

Provides solid waste collection for Mount Vernon taxpayers on an established schedule. It also provides weekly recycling collection for residents and business owners. DPW adheres to New York State and Westchester County imposed recycling and waste reduction goals. There are some items that the City is not allowed to collect. Please be sure to refer to our collection rules and guidelines for complete information. In 2020, over 34,000 tons of solid waste was collected in the City of Mount Vernon.

Metal pick-ups are temporarily suspended and will resume in April 2022 by appointment only. 

The following items can be picked up by appointment:

  • Cast iron tubs
  • Grills (No propane tanks)
  • Hot water tanks
  • Metal cabinets
  • Metal desks
  • Metal sinks
  • Refrigerators (Freon must be removed)
  • Sofa bed frames (Frames only)
  • Stoves
  • Washers/dryers

Yard waste collection will commence in April. Yard waste must be in an open container or brown paper refuse bag for proper collection.
